A Bristol giftware company is in the running to be named South West Greeting Card Retailer of the Year. Soukous, which has two shops in Cotham Hill, is down to the last five in the Greeting Card Retail Awards – “The Retas” – which reward professionalism and creativity in the industry.
The Retas give recognition to the UK’s best greeting card stockists from independent shops such as Soukous to supermarkets.
Soukous, now in its sixth year, specialises in selling unusual and beautiful gifts from jewellery to toys and also has a large stock of cards which include comic cards, children’s birthday cards and handmade cards.
The firm has a pink shop – for women – on the corner of Abbotsford Road, while the blue one, which is opposite, is for men.
The business recently reached the final five of the Retailer of the Year competition.
Elisa Snaden, of Soukous, said: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for this award – it is turning out to be a very good year for us.
“The opening of our new shop at Christmas (the pink one) allowed us to greatly extend our range of greeting cards.”
The winning retailer will be announced on July 11 at the Savoy Hotel.

Bigger, better and as eye-poppingly lovely as ever, but now bursting at the proverbial seams with what can only be described as a whole load of gorgeous new tempting girlie pink things, Bristol’s Soukous has just taken up residence in its new premises opposite the old shop on Cotham Hill. There’s nothing that these independent giftware gurus don’t know about fun and funky presents for all ages, not to mention jewellery and home accessories. Pop in for a quick browse, and chances are you’ll pop back out again with your bags crammed full of everything from to-die-for handbags, fabulous jewellery and covetable jewellery stands to strawberry bowls and Storm Watches.
They’ve also vastly expanded their choice of cards, along with their selection of gorgeous gifts for kids, Jellycat toys and scented Aromahome range (some lavender Hot Sox or a silk eye mask could go down a treat on Mothers Day). And just in case the boys were starting to feel left out, there’s the new Soukous Gizmos & Gadgets shop. The birthday presents and party bags on offer here are just what the doctor ordered for the man in your life (and while you’re there, don’t forget to ask for a demo of their micro remote-control helicopters). Or if you’ve been banned from illicit missions to Soukous’s Aladdin’s Caves with just your credit card to keep you company, browse (and spend!) to your heart’s content courtesy of their goodie bag of a mail-order website. Last-minute gift buying was never this much fun…
